Hakea laurina - pin-cushion hakea

DESCRIPTION: Unique flowering native shrub-tree with gum-like foliage and bi-colour pom pom flowers autumn and winter.
PLANTING: Sow seeds year round in warm locations and for cooler climates, once the last frost has set. Sow into deep pots containing good quality seed raising mix, add a sprinkle of Mr Fothergill's seed starter granules to help move things along. Gently press and cover with a thin layer of soil. Cover pots with clear plastic to help retain moisture, remove once seedlings begin to emerge and place in a warm shady spot. Plant into the garden when the tap root appears at the base of the pot. For best flowering, plant in a full sun location. Thrives in free draining soil.
CARE: Water seedlings regularly until established and infrequently as the plants mature. Tolerates light frost and drought once established. Mulch plants to retain moisture in the soil. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser during spring - Hakea are phosphorus-sensitive so the P ratio of the fertiliser needs to be under 3%. Stake plants in areas exposed to high wind.
