Two things are unusual about this freeflowering member of the ginger family ; first, it has pink buds instead of the usual white; and second, it's a little more cold tolerant than the others. Which might be useful to you if you're trying to create a tropical garden without the tropical temperatures...
Alpinia henryi - shell flower, pink cardamom ginger
APPEARANCE : Lush under-story native ginger with glossy evergreen foliage. Pale pink flowerbuds appear in summer. Commonly called cardamom ginger, this is related to root ginger and not to cardamom.USE FOR : Perfect for tropical gardens and containers in shaded areas.
CLIMATE : Subtropical and tropical gardens are ideal. Protect from frost; though it is more tolerant of cold than other gingers. In overnight frost the plant will die back but if soil is well mulched the rootball may survive.
PLANTING : Plant in free draining soil in sun to shade. Flowering will be reduced in shadier sites.
CARE: Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Water regularly during dry periods. Prune stems to the ground if plants become untidy, new shoots will replace those removed. Fertilise regularly using an organic liquid fertiliser for lush new growth.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 1.5-2 m H x 1-2 m W.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
