We think this will be a favourite - rich leaf colour turning from plum to red in autumn, dense habit, compact size, completely frost hardy, easygoing as to soil and situation, even in urban sites. Its only minor flaw - thorns - could be a plus point if you're looking for a security hedge.

Berberis thunbergii 'Little Favourite'

APPEARANCE: Neat small-leaved shrub with small richly coloured oval leaves, tiny flowers, followed by red berries. Stems are spiny. This is a dwarf form, growing to a third the usual height.
USES: Low growing hedges, security boundary, feature shrub, year-round leaf colour.
PLANTING: Plant in any kind of reasonably well drained soil in sun or shade. Colour may be less vibrant in shade but plant will grow healthily. Hardy to Siberian levels of cold.
CARE: Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Prune as required after flowering to maintain shape, and fertilise with a slow release fertiliser in spring.
