Eucalyptus latens - narrow leaf red mallee, secret mallee

APPEARANCE :Petite West Coast native mallee gumtree-shrub with smooth greyish bark, small blue-green young leaves, orange flower buds open to spring flowers, followed by small rounded rust-brown pods. 'Latens' means hidden or secret, as the first plants described for science - as late as 1998! - were hidden away in jarrah forest, trying to escape the attentions of roving taxonomists.
ORIGIN : Found in the wild in the Wheatbelt of WA.
USE FOR :  Ornamental garden tree-shrub, wildlife gardens, windbreak, to grow something the neighbours won't have.
CLIMATE : As a WA species it prefers mild Mediterranean-climate areas of Australia with abundant sunshine, lower humidity, drier summers. Drought and frost tolerant.
PLANTING :  Grows in most free-draining soil types.
CARE : Apply mulch and continue to water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks and regularly during extended dry periods. Prune hard to encourage young blue-green leaf growth if preferred.
HEIGHT :  2 - 4m H x 1 - 3m W
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
