Lactuca sativa Great Lakes - iceberg lettuce
DESCRIPTION: This lettuce is a great allrounder. Harvest when centres are large, add to salads and sandwiches for crisp refreshing texture.
PLANTING: Sow seeds year round in a full sun location or direct into seed raising mix, thin to 2-3 plants at approx 5cm in height.
USE IN: Harvest lettuce when hearts are full and tight. Avoid harvesting in the heat of the day as leaves tend to wilt, early morning is best.
CARE: Lettuce needs plenty of water, low moisture will yield bitter leaves. Water regularly and you'll be rewarded with loads of lush leaves. Prepare soil using well composted manure dug through with a garden fork. Mulch plants to help retain moisture in the soil and apply liquid fertiliser every 2-3 weeks for best results. If planting in a hot location during summer, provide partial shade. Leaf chewing insects can be controlled easily using eco-oil, it's organic and perfectly safe to use on fruit and veg plants.
