This fast-growing evergreen tree is always so popular with our customers for hedges, feature planting, and in containers. Deep glossy large leaves with a rich tan underside; very large white bowl-shaped flowers, which pollinators adore.

What's the difference between Little Gem and Teddy Bear?
  • Little Gem is more shade tolerant, faster growing
  • Little Gem has more tapering tips to the leaves
  • Little Gem has darker leaves and whiter flowers
  • Little Gem is more free-flowering, and flowers on younger plants

We propagate this plant once a year in the winter which means it is ready for sale from about Christmas onwards until we sell out.

Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem'

APPEARANCE : This is one of the most popular trees available in Australia.  Little Gem is a dwarf magnolia variety, sought after for their shape, colour and rewarding flowers and not too big for your garden.  The rich tan colour from the underside of the leaves is a feature as is its deep glossy green foliage not to mention the beautiful and fragrant large white flowers.
More shade tolerant, faster-growing, and more free-flowering than Teddy Bear.
USE FOR:  Feature tree, hedging and privacy screens, also suited to large containers.
PLANTING : Sunny or partly shaded position with morning or afternoon sun. Shelter from strong winds and exposed sites.
CARE : Plant in well drained soil in a full sun to partly shaded position in the garden. Provide plenty of water during dry periods. Remove seed heads after flowering, this encourages dense new growth and more prolific flowering. Feed with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants like Osmocote Roses, Gardenias, Azaleas & Camellias
HEIGHT & WIDTH : 4-5m H x 2-3m W.
YOUR PLANTS : These plants are larger than our usual tubestock plants and will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 100mm high and 75 mm wide. You can see an example in the image gallery
