Umbrella trees can thrive on neglect, which makes them popular potted plants for the less-than-green-fingered amongst us. Give it plenty of light and water, regular misting, a shady nook, and enjoy those beautifully-patterned creamy-green leaves emerge.

Schefflera arboricola 'Madame de Smet' - variegated umbrella tree

APPEARANCE:  Distinctive indoor or tropical plant, from its umbrella-like leaf arrangement radiating from a central stem. The glossy rounded leaves are marked with lemon yellow. Mature trees produce clusters of orange berries. Wild specimens in rainforests can reach many metres in height, developing into large trees; indoor potted plants generally stay around 2 metres tall. Madame de Smet is a popular variety.
USE FOR :  Indoor plant, outdoor container or balcony plant in warm climates, tropical garden plant.
PLANTING : Needs a sheltered frost-free spot over 10C. Prefers bright indirect light out of hot sun, but can adapt to lower light levels indoors. Grows in almost any good soil or houseplant compost.
CARE : Water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks; keep on the dry side in cooler weather when growth slows. Apply a slow release fertiliser twice yearly. Container plants may need extra feed and a repot into fresh soil once a year. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to keep them healthy and looking good. Keep away from pets that might eat the leaves, and wash your hands after handling or pruning the leaves.
