Watermelon Sugar Baby
Cucumis melo

DESCRIPTION: Fast growing groundcover vine producing small 15-20cm dark green round fruit. Flesh is sweet, deep pink with few seeds.
PLANTING: Spring-Summer and Winter in warmer areas. Sow seeds directly into their final position or into seedling trays. Thin and transplant when seedlings are easily handled, approx 10cm. Plant in a full sun location in free draining soil. For best results prepare soil by digging through well composted manure.
USE IN: Slice and chill for an energising summer snack or watermelon sorbet.
CARE: Water seedlings daily until established and follow up with regular water especially during dry periods. To get the most out of your plants, pinch out the growing tips when plants have approximately 5-6 leaves, this will encourage extra side shoots. When watering try to avoid wetting the foliage. Once fruit is set it's time to back off with the water a little allowing the fruit to develop rich sweet flavours. Apply liquid fertiliser regularly for best results. Harvest when the base becomes yellow and fruit sound hollow when tapped.
