Trailing vine producing large deliciously juicy fruit with sweet orange flesh. Rock melon vines love plenty of space so be sure to allow for this when planting. Good companions for sweetcorn (in the garden, rather than the fruitbowl...)
Cucumis melo 'Planter's Jumbo' - rockmelon
DESCRIPTION: Fast growing vine producing large fruit with deep orange flesh.PLANTING: Spring-Summer and Winter in warmer areas. Sow seeds directly into their final position or into seedling trays. Thin and transplant when seedlings are easily handled, approx 10cm. Plant in a full sun location in free draining soil. For best results prepare soil by digging in well composted manure.
USE IN: For a refreshing summer snack simply slice and serve chilled. Ideal added to fruit salad and for the more adventurous, try creating a smooth sorbet.
CARE: Water seedlings daily until established and follow up with regular water especially during dry periods. When watering try to avoid wetting the foliage. Once fruit is set it's time to back off with the water a little allowing the fruit to develop rich sweet flavours. Apply liquid fertiliser regularly for best results. Harvest fruit when the surface is rough and the stem begins to smell sweet. The fruit should come away easily from the plant when ripe.
