Cucumis melo 'Planter's Jumbo' - rockmelon, cantaloupe

DESCRIPTION : Fast-growing vine producing large round fragrant fruit with deep orange flesh. Leaves are large and soft.
SOWING : Sow spring-summer; and winter in warmer areas. Sow seeds directly into their final position or into pots, 12mm deep. Germinates in 6-10 days.
PLANTING :& Thin and transplant when seedlings are easily handled, approx 10cm. Pinch out the tips after planting, leaving 5-6 leaves on the stem, to encourage bushy side shoots. Plant in a full sun location in free draining soil; about 1m from other plants as they are large and fast-growing. For best results prepare soil by digging in well composted manure.
CARE : Water seedlings daily until established and follow up with regular water especially during dry periods. Apply liquid fertiliser regularly for best results. When watering try to avoid wetting the foliage - water into the soil. Once fruit is set it's time to back off with the water a little allowing the fruit to develop rich sweet flavours. Harvest fruit when the surface is rough and the stem begins to smell sweet - about 12-14 weeks from germination. The fruit should come away easily from the plant when ripe.
CONTENTS : 35 seeds approx
