Harvest deliciously rich-flavoured pumpkins for your favourite recipes. Pumpkins are surprisingly versatile meaning you can use them in almost anything from delicate deserts to robust roast dishes. Good companion plants for sunflowers too!
Curcurbita pepo 'Queensland Blue' pumpkin
DESCRIPTION : Fast-growing groundcover vine up to 2m across, producing large grey-green pumpkins with dense richly flavoured orange flesh. Pumpkin complements both sweet (pumpkin pie and scones) and savoury dishes (spiced soup, roast veg, damper) and can be stored in a cool dark spot for up to 6 months.
SOWING : Sow 12mm deep direct or into pots, in spring-summer (and in winter in warmer areas). Germinates in 6-10 days
PLANTING : Transplant when seedlings are easily handled, approx 10cm. After planting, pinch out the tops of the shoots leaving 5-6 leaves, to encourage bushy side shoots to develop. Plant in a full sun location in free draining soil, 1m from other plants. For best results prepare soil by digging through well composted manure.
CARE: Water seedlings daily until established and follow up with regular water especially during dry periods. Apply liquid fertiliser regularly for best results. When your pumpkins start to grow, keep their bottoms dry with straw or a small paver to raise them off wet soil. Harvest when vines begin to die back, around 16-20 weeks.
