Who would think this big thorny bushy citrus, with its odd figure-eight leaves and gnarly bumpy fruits, would taste so good and smell so sweet? It goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover. Hugely popular across southeast Asia for culinary and beauty uses - the leaves, juice, and rind all add flavour and fragrance to all kinds of things

Citrus hystrix, Citrus micrantha - makrut, kaffir lime

APPEARANCE : Tall bushy tree-shrub with long thorns. Deep green leaves with a distinctive figure 8 or waisted leaf. Small scented white blossoms become small golfball sized round fruits with distinctive lumpy skin, yellow when ripe but usually picked and used green. These are produced year round in tropical climates. Kaffir is a slur for many people so the Thai name makrut is commonly used now.
ORIGIN : Tropical southeast Asia
USE FOR : Feature planting, orchards and kitchen gardens, privacy and security hedging, container growing. Very popular for cooking. The juice is said to prevent leech bites. We have not tested this.
CLIMATE : Frost free for best results. May survive light overnight frost once established
PLANTING : Plant in full sun and well drained soil in a sheltered spot for maximum fruits.
CARE : Low maintenance, doesn't need pruning unless to trim to shape. Feed when the plant starts to produce fruit, and if pest damage occurs spray with a safe treatment like Eco-Oil.
MATURE HEIGHT & WIDTH :  2 to 11m H depending on conditions. Keep at desired height with regular pruning.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
