Get the look of cool-climate hydrangeas in a subtropical garden with this heat-tolerant sunloving lookalike; big leaves and clusters of sea-blue flowers in season. The flower colour may vary in shades of lilac and purple-pink in neutral-alkaline soils as the images show.

Dichroa versicolor - evergreen hydrangea
APPEARANCE : Large soft-leaved evergreen subtropical shrub with hydrangea-like clusters of flowers in shades of blue. Flower colour varies with pH as with standard hydrangea species.
USE FOR : Feature plant, used for hedging and in containers.
PLANTING : Prefers a full sun to part shade position with extra water during dry periods. Prefers a temperate sub-tropical climate. Plant in free draining soil rich in organic matter. Protect from frost.
CARE: Mulch and water well until established. Prune after flowering to encourage new growth and flowering. Feed with a controlled release fertiliser twice yearly.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 2.5m H x 2.5m W.
