Hamburg gave us the Beatles origin story, the birthplace of Angela Merkel, the burger-in-a-bun, and the second-biggest city in Germany.
The powerhouse city is built around a deep international port and a huge river-canal network - which makes perfect sense for this beautiful hydrangea.
The petal colours shift from sea-navy to deep ocean purple, pale river-blue flushed with touches of sunrise pink. Depending on your soil pH, you might see any or all of these shades emerge in your own Hamburg.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hamburg'
APPEARANCE : Large leaved deciduous shrub with large rounded flower heads and soft light green leaves. Petal colour is usually purple but may vary deeper blue-purple or lighter rose-pink according to soil pH. As a general rule acid soil (pH 5 or below) produces blue flowers and neutral to alkaline (pH 6-7), produces mauve, pink through to red.USE FOR : Ideal for cottage gardens, woodland style gardens, mixed beds, large containers.
PLANTING : Hydrangeas prefer a partly shaded position in the garden, rich soil, and plenty of water during dry periods. Very cold hardy.
CARE: Water regularly during the first 8-12 weeks until the plant is established. Apply a slow release fertiliser early spring. Protect from harsh sunlight. Macrophyllas flower on old wood so site them carefully to give them space to grow. Prune them by deadheading spent flowers back to a leaf joint.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 1.2m H x 1.2m W.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
