This nectar-rich native gum is frost and drought tolerant; will grow in clay, sandy loam, and occasionally soggy soils, puts up with urban pollution; and makes a great windbreak. Altogether a very useful garden tree!

As if that weren't enough to recommend it, it coppices well to a low tree or even hedge; and the flowers are prized by beekeepers for honey production.

Eucalyptus platypus - moort, maalok

APPEARANCE :A West Coast native gumtree, wide and branched from low down the trunk, and slightly twisted in the branch growth. Large fluffy cream-yellow blossoms appear in spring or more usually late summer depending on location. The grey mature bark peels off in little strips to reveal tan-brown beneath.
ORIGIN : Found in the wild in the south west corner of WA, and has proved very adaptable in gardens across Australia.
USE FOR :  Ornamental garden tree, feature shrub when coppiced (cut hard back), windbreak, wildlife gardens, honey production.
CLIMATE : Frost hardy, drought tolerant, tolerates pollution.
PLANTING :  Grows in most free-draining soil types including clay, sand, and rocky. Note : moort is proving to have weed potential in the Eyre Peninsula so if you live there please check with your local council before planting.
CARE : Apply mulch and continue to water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks and regularly during extended dry periods. If you prefer your platypus to have a single trunk rather than a branched one, prune carefully from young to create the shape you want.
HEIGHT :  5-8m H x 5-8m W varying with location
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
