We're equipping our packing team with oven mitts for this one - it's a super-spiny sexy cactus with fearsome spines and a distinct trunk which develops as it slowly grows.

Usually raised as potted plants indoors, pachypodiums will eventually grow into stately trees in desert garden settings. They're not palms though, at least not as we would know them - they're actually distantly related to star jasmine, if you can believe it. 

Pachypodium lamerei - Madagascar palm

APPEARANCE : Easy care Madagascan succulent with spiny stems and long oval dark green leaves in a rosette at the top of each stalk. Flowers are simple, round flat petals, fragrant in clusters on mature garden and wild plants. In the wild it grows to a tall fat-trunked tree but in the home it will remain a neat tabletop cactus. RHS Award of Garden Merit as an indoor plant.
USE FOR : Ornamental container plant ideal in well lit areas; waterwise garden planting in dry climates;
PLANTING : Plant in sandy free draining alkaline soil in pots or out in the garden, in a sunny position. Protect plants from cold.
CARE : Requires little water during the winter. Weekly light watering during the warmer months will keep plants looking lush. Needs temperatures over 10C.
NOTE: Exercise caution when handling as thorns are sharp. If damaged the plant will exude a latex which can be an skin and nose irritant, and toxic if swallowed, so keep pets and small children away.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 30cm H x 20cm W on average in indoor pots; slowly to 4m H in gardens
