Pittosporum - variegated lemonwood

Crush the bright white-striped leaves and breathe in the pine-lemon scent of this lovely evergreen tree.  You'll get bonus fragrant flowers, very similar to our native lemon myrtle, in summer as well as those scented leaves.

It's small enough for gardens and street planting - and fast-growing tall privacy screens if pruned regularly. It tolerates most soil types except heavy clay, and has minimal leaf drop too.

Grows on the north and south islands in its New Zealand home so it should be adaptable to many Aussie climate conditions, given a little extra water in hot summers.

Pittosporum eugenioides 'Variegatum' - lemonwood, tarata

APPEARANCE : Fast-growing small tree or tall privacy hedge originating from New Zealand. Leaves are long, with a wavy edge on almost-black stems; when crushed they release a unique oil with a fragrance somewhere between lemon and pine. Summer flowers are cream-yellow, honey-scented, and grow in clusters at the end of the stem. Variegatum has white variable striping along the edges of each leaf. RHS Award of Garden Merit.
USE FOR : Feature tree, tall hedges, privacy screens.
CLIMATE : Tolerates overnight frost; protect from hard frost
PLANTING : Plant in well drained soil of any kind, in full sun. Will grow better in a sheltered location protected from stiff breezes.
CARE : Fertilise with a slow release fertiliser in spring and again in autumn. Regular pruning is required to maintain shape and compact growth. Will regrow after a hard prune if necessary. Water frequently until plant is established, and during dry spells as it doesn't like drying out. Mulch well in winter in frosty locations to keep the roots warm.
HEIGHT & WIDTH :  6-8 m H x 3-4 m W.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
