One for the connoisseurs, this unusually-coloured pinky-brown flowering sage also gives you grey foliage colour, and a lemon-pepper scent when you crush the leaves. (Fancy cooks in its native South Africa use the leaves as we do lemon myrtle.)
Sand sage is rugged, managing to thrive in hot, dry, windy, coastal sites, and poor sandy soils; and will come through a frosty night.
We can't ship this product to Tasmania, Western Australia.
Salvia lanceolata - sand sage
APPEARANCE : Medium-sized flowering sage with grey foliage, lemon scented when crushed, and unusual pink-brown tubular flowers.USE FOR : Cottage style gardens, mixed beds and borders, wildlife gardens, pots and tubs. Leaves are edible and lemon-pepper scented.
PLANTING : Plant in a full sun to partly shaded position in the garden, in light very free-draining soil. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks.
CARE : Clip over lightly after flowering, to encourage fresh growth and more flowers. Fertilise in spring using a slow release fertiliser, give an extra boost during the summer heat using eco-seaweed. Tolerant of overnight frost once established. Protect from hard frost and mulch in winter to keep soil warm.
