This child of the 1980s appeared as if by magic at Burrendong Arboretum, NSW. It's a gorgeous native hybrid, twice as wide as it is tall, and in the cooler months, is covered with sparkling pincushions of pink and white, which grow all along the stems like a satay stick.
It's a great wildlife refuge, as the foliage is layered and somewhat prickly. It doesn't like high humidity and heavy soils, but otherwise is a beauty of a garden plant.

Hakea Burrendong Beauty
APPEARANCE: Native hybrid shrub, with stiff, somewhat prickly, leaves; a wide low habit, and spidery pink and white flowers in winter which develop between the leaves. Often listed as Hakea crassinervia, it's likely a cross between H myroides and H petiolaris.USE FOR : Feature plant, native gardens, wildlife shelter.
CLIMATE : Does not like high humidity. Tolerates moderate frost and dry spells once established.
PLANTING: For best flowering, plant in full sun, which will also encourage denser growth. Grows in most kinds of free draining soil. Sets very little seed so is safe to plant.
CARE: Water regularly until established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser during spring - Hakea species can be phosphorus-sensitive so the P ratio of the fertiliser needs to be under 3%. Stake plants in areas exposed to wind.HEIGHT & WIDTH : 1.5m H x 3m W.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
