Plant this dramatically-coloured grass where you can see the light shine through it and your garden will glow scarlet, ruby and vermilion. Deciduous in colder climates, it may well keep growing and glowing right through a subtropical winter. Gorgeous.

We love Japanese blood grass for the intense colour, ability to grow almost anywhere.
Imperata cylindrica ‘Rubra’ - Japanese blood grass
APPEARANCE : Hardy dwarf grass with green leaf blades tipped blood red, often entirely deep red. The parent species is found worldwide in a range of climates and conditions.USE FOR : Dramatic seasonal mass planting, year-round colour in frost-free areas, contrast groundcover planting. The parent species is flammable so avoid mass planting next to homes in bushfire-prone areas.
CLIMATE : Frost tolerant, perhaps even frost hardy in well drained soils.
PLANTING : Plant in full sun or part shade in moist well drained soil for best colour. Suited to container planting. Rubra is much better behaved than its parent species but can be vigorous in moist cool climates.
CARE : Mulch and water well until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Fertilise with a slow release fertiliser during spring.
HEIGHT & WIDTH : 50cm H x 50cm W.
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
