Kneel, peasant! The Queen demands high humidity, dappled shade, year-round warmth.

Like the royal she is, she looks at her best raised up off the ground, on a platform, above the commoners. Only then will she produce her gorgeous metre-long leaves (yep, 100 centimetres, or more!) for us to gasp at and admire.

For gardeners in northern QLD and top end NT, this regal velvety tree-dweller could be the piece de resistance of your shady tropical border.

For the rest of us, we're going to have to roll up our sleeves and put in the hard yards. (To be fair, if we looked this glamorous we'd have a long list of riders and requirements too... )

Anthurium warocqueanum - queen anthurium
APPEARANCE:   Tropical cloudforest foliage plant from Colombia with a handful of very long - over a metre - dark green evergreen leaves, soft to touch, with a distinctive web of pale green-white veins. Leaf tone and shade can change with light, warmth, growing conditions and individual plants. Young leaves are a lighter green, without the distinctive ribs. The plants are epiphytes in the wild - growing in tree crowns. (She's a bit of a tongue twister : an-THUR-ee-um wah-ROCK-wee-AH-num)
USE IN: Tropical shade gardens, and well lit subtropical patio areas. Indoor decor especially in bathrooms.
CLIMATE : Suited to warm climates, high humidity, and sheltered areas. Protect from cold and draughts - keep between 15C and 38C, 25-28C optimally. Hotter temperatures can result in leaf loss.
PLANTING :  A partly shaded position in the garden or home, out of direct sunlight which can burn the leaves. Plant in a free draining slightly acid to neutral pH soil rich in organic matter.  A potting mix rich with peat moss or humus is ideal, as is orchid mix; and sphagnum moss with perlite. Moss around the stems helps improve humidity in drier climates.
CARE: Water regularly during the first 12 weeks until the plant is established; then afterwards when the soil surface is dry. Water less in winter. Mist often in dry locations and when growing indoors. Feed with high nitrogen fertiliser for foliage plants monthly spring-autumn, to ensure lush growth. Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust if necessary.
MATURE HEIGHT: 2-3m H
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
