Flindersia brayleyana - Queensland maple
Officially this tall native rainforest tree is commonly known as the QLD maple, because it has beautiful pale silky hardwood, prized for decorative cabinetry and musical instruments, and used to make wartime bomber planes.
We reckon if you've ever seen it, you'll know this one as the cauliflower tree - because in full summer bloom it looks like there are dozens of bright plump cauliflowers perched in the branches!
The leaves are long, dark, glossy; and after the flowers you'll enjoy large creamy decorative seedpods too.
Most wild stands of this tree are now protected; so whether you want a very decorative native shade tree or a source of timber for whittling and woodworking, it's worth planting if you have the space.
