Fragrant cottage garden shrub with small dark purple flowers loved by bees and butterflies. Plant amongst your fruit trees to help pollination. English lavender is hardier than the French and Italian kinds, ideal for colder regions; and Bee is an Australian bred variety very high in those all-important essential oils.

Lavandula angustifolia 'Bee' - English lavender

APPEARANCE : Scented flowering shrub, woody at the base, with slender grey-green foliage and slim stems of dark purple flowers during spring. Bee variety is very high in essential oil.
USE FOR : Perfect for cottage gardens and hedging. Suited to rockeries and pots. Cut flowers may be dried and used in flower arrangements or potpourri.
CLIMATE : Right at home in cool dry climates. Frost and drought tolerant. English lavender is much hardier in cold temperatures than the Italian or French lavender.
PLANTING : Plant in a sunny location and free-draining soil. Will tolerate lower light levels but flowering will be affected.
CARE : Mulch and water regularly for the first 12 weeks until the plant establishes. Prune twice yearly (taking care to remove only 1/3 of the foliage while avoiding cutting into old wood) and fertilise yearly using a slow release fertiliser after flowering maintain compact growth. Avoid wet feet. Tolerates frost once established, if drainage is good.
