Poncirus Flying DragonBack in stock: Now
If you are looking for an impenetrable deer- (and burglar) resistant privacy hedge - or a strikingly ornamental and unusual tree for your garden - this poncirus has to be on the shortlist. White scented flowers, curvaceous stems like a ninja's blade, edible orange fruits (it's a citrus) all add to the year-round appeal. And it definitely podiums for "most awesome thorns in the floral kingdom". Work out how many plants you need for your hedge here
Poncirus trifoliata 'Flying Dragon'DESCRIPTION: Thorny citrus tree with small green glossy leaves, small lightly-scented white blossoms, small velvet-skinned fruits, large thorns. Flying Dragon is a dwarf form with contorted curved stems; deciduous so you can really appreciate those branches in winter.
USE IN: Feature planting, security barriers, boundary hedging, privacy hedging dense enough to walk on. The fruit is bitter but makes good marmalade and jellies.
PLANTING: Plant in full sun and well drained soil. Cold tolerant, will survive extended periods of snow. Alkaline water may cause yellowing of the leaves; treat with citrus-specific plant food if this occurs.
CARE: Prune hard to desired height for hedging, or prune out branches to accentuate the stems.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 4 m x 3 m.
YOUR PLANTS: These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
