Brooms are tough old battlers, putting up with dry unpromising conditions and putting on a show of golden flowers through spring and into summer. They love it hot and sunny, which is great for most of us!

This one needs a frost freespot, and if you plant it in a sheltered position you'll enjoy the fragrant flowers all the more.

Note: this is called dwarf broom, which means that it's smaller than the regular broom. It will still get to around head height, maybe higher in favourable environments, to give you masses of colour.

Cytisus racemosus nana – dwarf yellow broom

APPEARANCE : Evergreen slightly 'leggy' shrub with green foliage and masses of scented yellow pea flowers in spring.
USE FOR : Containers, beds, borders for brilliant display of cold weather colour.
PLANTING : This shrub prefers full sun; will tolerate some shade but flowering may be reduced. Plant in free draining soil of any kind. Happy in dry outback air. Most cytisus are frost-hardy; this one is from the Canary Isles and needs frost-free conditions so please test its hardiness! Broom species can self seed; this one is not known to be problematic but plant with care near bushland and prune the shrub to remove any seedpods before they ripen if necessary.
CARE: Mulch and water well, trim back after flowering to promote compact growth and flowering. Feed with a controlled release fertiliser three times a year, and boost feeding with seaweed solution if leaves become yellow on very poor soils.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 1.5 - 2 m H x 1 - 1.5 m W.
YOUR PLANTS: These plants are tube-stock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
