Our Little Favourite berberis definitely lived up to its name with our gardeners so we've extended the choice for you with this lovely variety. As the name suggests it grows slender like a pillar, making a gorgeous accent plant, low compact hedge, or a richly-coloured container shrub.
Berberis thunbergii atropurpurea 'Helmond Pillar'
APPEARANCE: Very upright slender slowgrowing shrub with small rounded maroon-wine leaves, tiny flowers, followed by red berries. Stems are spiny.USE FOR: deciduous hedges, security boundary, feature shrub, year-round leaf colour. PLANTING: Plant in any kind of reasonably well drained soil in sun or shade. Colour may be less vibrant in shade but plant will grow healthily. Hardy to Siberian levels of cold.
CARE: Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Prune as required after flowering to maintain shape, and fertilise with a slow release fertiliser in spring.
