Bauhinia variegata - orchid tree
APPEARANCE : Large orchid-like flowers have tapering petals in shades of hot pink. The grey-green leaves are symmetrical in two parts like a butterfly wing. The tree has a short trunk, spreading branches and is marginally frost hardy. In tropical climates it is semi-evergreen, in cooler climates it is deciduous, flowering on leafless branches.
USE FOR : Ideal used as a shade tree in medium to large gardens; street tree; feature tree.
PLANTING : Plant in a full sun/part shade position in the garden in well drained soil.
CARE: Easily maintained with average water needs. Protect from strong wind, not suited to coastal planting. Prune after flowering if you need to reduce the size.
HEIGHT AND WIDTH: 6-10m H x 6m W.
